Updates: 24/04/2020; 03/04/2020
The Novo Coronavirus, AKA Covid-19, AKA Wuhan Coronavirus knows NO boundaries, NO age and NO gender, fluid or otherwise. IT is an equal opportunity killing machine with origins from a wet market in China.
Since December 2019, we had been tracking the deadly virus to understand its behaviour, how it spreads and infects, incubation period, death factors and how to efficiently protect oneself against it. More importantly, we studied the response times of government agencies around the world and their best practices to keep their citizens safe.
Whilst alarm bells were being raised, many western governments including the United States of America (U.S.A.), United Kingdom (U.K.) and Italy failed to heed the warnings. Now, the U.S.A leads the world in the most Novo Coronavirus cases and Italy faces the grim reality of the most deaths. Meanwhilst, in other parts of the world, namely Asia, the virus had slowed, albeit not completely flattened the curve. In the Czech Republic, they not only made face masks compulsory for all citizens, but the country closed its borders to slow the influx of the virus and issued stay at home public orders.
Meanwhilst, headed into March 2020, the U.S.A., President Trump and his 'friends' at Fox News, in particular Sean Hannity, Trish Regan (since fired) and Jeanine Pirro continued to tow the line that the Coronavirus was a hoax. Ms. Pirro even went on record to claim that more people died from the flu and dismissed Covid-19 all together, all the whilst the infection rate in the USA continued to rise, having spread to ALL 50 states.
The lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for medical staff, coupled with limited testing capabilities for all citizens, has exposed a serious weakness. The Atlantic's science writer, Ed Young in an interview with Morning Joe on MSNBC, explained the index that ranked and rated countries according to their preparedness. At the start of 2020, the U.S.A. held the top ranking at 83.5%, "a solid B" but they would probably get an "F looking at the response right now."
In addition, the NHS, CDC and WHO had severely undermined the safety of their citizens through misinformation. According to wide reports, citizens were advised that washing hands for 20 seconds was MORE effective than wearing masks or gloves. They also argued that people would not know how to properly wear masks or gloves, even to 'allege' that chances of getting Covid-19 was greater because of masks and gloves. This was 'parroted' by many well known medical doctors in Australia, U.K. and the U.S.A. Asia, in particular South Korea and other countries such as the Czech Republic, resisted either making masks compulsory or elective, resulting in lower infection rates and deaths. Recently, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the U.S.A. broke rank to consider the viability of masks to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
The problem with NHS, CDC and WHO recommendations are that NOT all Covid-19 infected individuals are symptomatic. Asymptomatic Covid-19 carriers can spread the virus too. What makes them MORE dangerous is the fact, they don't even know they have the virus. If everyone wore a mask, asymptomatic carriers can also protect others.
The issue with 'Social Distancing' measures is it provides a 'false' sense of security. People who get infected will most likely pick up the virus from surfaces that were touched by others. If a person does not show symptoms of Covid-19, these encounters, whether social distancing at the grocery store or getting food delivered to the safety of your home will not protect you. Let's say you practised social distancing of at least six (6) feet at the grocery store. You go down the aisle and select cereal that could have been touched by a symptomatic or asymptomatic Covid-19 individual. The same is true for self checkout lanes where you physically have to push buttons. These machines are not wiped down after every use.
So, how do you PROPERLY protect yourself and keep your home safe? CREATE A BARRIER AND STERILISE! STERILISE!
A. MASK INSTRUCTIONS - It takes discipline. Masks are best worn if you are shopping for essential items, where the risk of encountering others is greater. Please check out the video below for tips on how to properly wear a mask. REMEMBER, to create a STERILE environment when putting on and removing your mask. That means, wash your hands for 20 seconds or use an hand sanitiser for the same length as soap and water. The video below should provide some guidance on how to properly sterilise your hands. REMEMBER, not to touch the mask once fitted to your face. BEFORE taking off the mask, sterilise your hands again using the same method. REMEMBER, to cover your mouth, nose and chin area. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION, wear protective eye gear such as sunglasses or glasses, if you wear one. ALWAYS protect your eyes, nose and mouth and NEVER touch your face without FIRST sterilising your hands, even with gloves!
B. GLOVES INSTRUCTION - In order to create a PROPER barrier, make sure you are wearing TWO gloves. Keep your base layer STERILE at all times. Treat your outer layer as your hands. Use a hand sanitiser whenever you come in contact with surface areas, such as Grocery store shelves or self checkout machines. The outer layer can be thrown away after use. When pulling gloves off for disposal, make sure you remove gloves from the inside out.
C. CLOTHING INSTRUCTIONS - ANY clothing and shoes you wear outside, should be removed at home. If you have a 'mud room,' use it as an extra barrier. DO NOT walk around your house with shoes you wore outside. Keep an extra pair of clean clothing and slippers or shoes near the entrance way or the bathroom. Remove clothing and wash immediately. Do not mix clothing with other clothing you may have in your hamper. REMEMBER, whilst the virus does not fair well on textile, it has the potential to live for an hour on fabrics. If you take public transportation, cleaning your clothes as soon as you return home is a good common sense practice. If you use public washers, separate out your street clothes.
D. PACKAGES AND GROCERIES INSTRUCTION - When breaking 'stay at home' to shop for essentials, BRING your own bags. WIPE CARTS prior to use, but do so going in one direction to mitigate recontamination. During checkout, refuse the store bags. Have checkout clerks place the items back in the cart. TRANSFER items into your prepared STERILISED bags by FIRST wiping down the items BEFORE transferring them. This final step will be easier if you are shopping using your automobile. If you are walking home or using public transportation, TRANSFER ITEMS from your cart to your STERILISED bags after checkout and before you leave the store.

Update: 24th April 2020. iMPROPER Mask wearing instruction (above). Bender Hair Salon in Georgia re-opened on Friday, 24th April 2020. The owner proudly showed the news crew how she prepared to keep her customers and staff safe. The PROBLEM: The owner does not know how to properly wear a mask. She is seen on this clip wearing a mask that DID NOT cover her nose, thus promoting spread of Covid-19, if she had been asymptomatic.
Update: 3rd April 2020. The CDC now recommends all Americans wear a face mask when going out. The WHO has still not fully committed to wearing face masks, but advises citizens that it 'may' help the spread. Meanwhilst, The U.S.A. President Trump doesn't think people need a face mask, but reading from script, considers it a personal decision, albeit he prefers not to wear one since he thinks it doesn't look 'Presidential' sitting behind the desk at the Oval Office.
We have updated our mask wearing recommendation. Those who have a surgical mask (not N95), either included in their home emergency kits or purchased or acquired legally and ethically, please place a covering over the mask, such as a bandana, as an extra barrier. Whilst the surgical mask cannot be washed, the covering can be washed. This will ensure you can wear the surgical mask multiple times when out in public for "essential grocery" shopping. REMINDER, the more times you wear the surgical mask, the less effective it will become, even if you have the extra covering as a barrier. If you are wearing a "home made" mask, please ensure you are using double layered material as a barrier. We have posted a video below as a guide on how to create your NO SEW home made mask using a bandana.
