The explosive documentary on Channel 5 revealed insight to Thomas Markle Sr. and thoughts on his deteriorated relationship with his daughter, Meghan Markle. The documentary provided a troubling glimpse into a father's love and a daughter's warning. Mr. Markle admitted to making mistakes leading up to the marriage of his daughter to Prince Harry; but were these indiscretions damaging enough to terminate a long term father-daughter relationship?
In any report and interview, there are three sides to every story. The subjective, the objective and the truth. The latter is more challenging because something always gets lost in translation or the telling of the story. We also loose objectivity due to natural prejudice.
As a full disclosure, our personal views of Meghan Markle are skewed because we have studied her behaviour and read literally every journalistic reports about her since the BBC interview of November 2017. We were very research heavy too. To be fair, we also analysed every aspect of Thomas Markles Sr and his claims against Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. In both instances of father and daughter, we discovered a degree of 'deception.'
Deception comes in many forms. They could also be 'obvious' or 'implied.' The latter is more difficult to detect but through careful analysis of visual clues consistent through every interview, there were traits that could not be ignored.
This leads us to what exactly Mr. Markle wanted from this interview on Channel 5, which he confirmed was for pay. He revealed the most personal parts of his relationship with his daughter Meghan, included with personal photos and home videos. He does falter on some memory, for instance, whether Meghan lived with him prior to leaving for college. It was revealed by Channel 5 that Meghan lived with mother Doria prior to her move to Chicago. This was not at all 'deception,' it was 'recollection' meaning that most humans don't have a large capacity to remember every detail of our lives.
Mr. Markle revealed that Meghan promised to take care of him during his senior years. It was a promise that would not come to fruition. Many 'critics' might point to Mr. Markle's attempt to 'extort' funds from Meghan and challenge the notion that she owes him anything. Mr. Markle harps upon the fact that he paid for her education and helped pay for other expenses including an apartment. Meghan, in turn provided at least $20,000 in gifts and personal loans in two years. Would this be a fair exchange?
What most western civilisation do not realise is that in many other communities, multi-generational families are living under the same roof, supporting the dynamics of the family unit. This family model is not just happening in Asia, it is happening in heartland America too. Asians, Indians, Africans, Italians and even Jewish have built a community around their families, so the idea of children supporting their elderly parents during their senior years is not a new concept or so far fetched that it would become fodder for trolls or the cultural ignorants.
One of the most famous Indian actress, Aishwrya Rai Bachchan and her husband continued to live under the same roof with her parents, after they were married. She and her husband appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show where she exclaimed that culturally it was normal for grown children to live with their parents, even after marriage. Ms. Winfrey's comments and facial disbelief said it all. Culturally speaking, Ms. Winfrey was trying to understand, but it was an impossible notion even for her.
This interview revealed Mr. Markle's anger and frustration, more than anything. First, he admitted to making a bad judgement with the pre-wedding pap photos that were staged. His reasoning may be 'childish' but they were sincere. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have also made mistakes and should not be burden-free by the way they reacted and neglected Mr. Markle to handle the aftermath on his own.
It was inconceivable that Mr. Markle, who had no previous dealings with the media, having lived a quiet life in Mexico, would know how to spin a story. He received no help from Buckingham Palace, Meghan Markle or Prince Harry. So, in this regard, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not blameless. They contributed to bad press and backlash. Instead of dealing with the issue straight a way, or at least discussing this matter openly with Mr. Markle, Meghan Markle chose consciously to let her friends do the talking on People Magazine, in similar fashion to Princess Diana. As a direct result, Mr. Markle released some of the pages from a letter sent to him by his daughter Meghan.
The real irony and tragedy here is that Meghan Markle's mindless attempts to shut her father up has literally backfired. Instead of dealing with the issue straight on, she chose to ignore it and ignore him. Those who ignore history, most often times, repeat it. She sent her rings back via post to her first husband, Trevor Engelson and now she did the exact same thing to her father.
The letters are at the heart of a lawsuit filed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry against the Daily Mail. Excerpts of the letters can be found on the Daily Mail website.
